Summer School: A Label of Love…

So are you finding times in which you can do some “educational” things with your kids?  The key is to make it fun so that they don’t even realize you are trying to teach them something.  The lessons I taught in the classroom that always went well were the ones in which I let the children believe they were actually deciding what we were doing.  I threw out the bait and let them feel as if they were directing the rest of the lesson.  The best way to do this is with questions, lots of questions.  Think of it as payback to your 4-year-old for the 5 million questions he asks you everyday (sorry, was my personal vendetta a little too obvious right there??).

To continue a little letter/word recognition review, I came up with this labeling activity.  I used to do something similar in the classroom so I figured why not apply it here at home?  In “teacher terms” we used to call this a readable environment.  It just means creating reading opportunities at every turn.  The key to learning new things is repetition so the more your kids see letters, numbers, and words the more they will be able to recognize them.

You will need:
index cards (or any scrap paper but something sturdy)
tape
markers
pencil
*laminating machine

Step 1:  Choose one room in your house to be labeled.  The child’s bedroom is a great option because they spend a lot of time there.

Step 2:  Get your child excited by telling them you are going on a scavenger hunt in their bedroom.  Get cheesy, get excited, make it fun for them.  Tell them to point out as many things as they can while you make a list of the words.  Obviously you want to start with words that are on their level.  If your child points out “comforter” you can skip that one on the list!

Step 3:  Give your child the pieces of paper and do one of two things:

1.  Write the words lightly in pencil and have them trace with the marker
OR
2.  Dictate the words to them, letter by letter, and have them write them first in pencil then trace over again with marker. (Pencil first gives them a chance to correct if need be).
(This step will really depend on your child’s ability at this point.)

*Step 4:  I would suggest taking the cards to Office Depot or Kinkos and having them laminated for durability but this is totally optional.

Step 5:  Let your child go around the room and tape the label to the item.  Once again up the cheese factor and make this the most exciting thing you’ve ever done!

For the next few weeks have your child read aloud the label anytime he or she encounters it.  For example, when he turns on the light, have him point to the label and read “light”.  Over and over he will read these words and will be building a foundation for reading.  Now give yourself an A+ for taking the time to do this with your child!

    Summer School: DIY Kid Calendar

Although it now seems like a lifetime ago, I was once a kindergarten teacher.  I still have all of my teaching materials stored away for if and when I return to the classroom.  Sometimes I do catch myself saying things I used to say to my students and looking for "teachable moments" (nerd alert).
I am making a conscience effort to do at least a couple of crafts and educational things with my sons this summer.  Moose and Zee are great teachers but I figured I'd better get in on the action too!  I am not sure if your kids do this, but my 4-year-old wakes up everyday asking, "What are we going to do today?"  I wanted a way for him to be able to answer that question for himself sometimes and to get excited about some of the fun things I have planned for him this summer.  I thought up an idea that will help do what I just mentioned along with help him practice his writing and number recognition.  Its the teacher in me, I guess!  This is a great activity for any child that is pre-school age or even for review before first grade.  It can be tailored to your child's level.

    Here is "Oliver's Summer Calendar"

Here is how we did it:

Step 1:  Create a table in Word (or similar program or just hand draw it with a ruler) that is a 7x4 grid.

Step 2:  On a separate piece of paper draw numbers 1-30.  Make them large (@ 1 in.) and in your best print.

*Your child's age and abilities will dictate how independently they will do the next steps.

Step 3:  Get your child involved: ask him which color to use for each word, to tell you some things he would like to do this summer, to recite the days of the week.

Step 4:  Have your child number the boxes (I would suggest using pencil for easy corrections).  She can reference your number sheet for help if needed.  Another great practice tool for beginners is to lightly draw the number with dots/dashes and have your child trace it.  If your child is ready for more advanced writing practice do the same method for the letters in each word.

Step 5:  Discuss some fun things that are planned for the summer.  Have your child choose a color for regular activities like, the pool, to serve as a key.  Soon they will associate the word with the color, for example blue=the pool.  In our case it was crucial that we had a big event to which we could count down.  This helped get my son excited about using the calendar and gives Mommy a great bribing tool!

Step 6:  The last element of the calendar is the countdown number.  This is just another place that my son will practice writing his numbers.  Each morning when he gets up he checks the calendar for the day's activity, marks it through with an "x" and writes the new number of days until the "big event!"  In our case this is having a friend sleep over...I will be installing the rubber walls in the playroom next week!

    DIY Silhouettes...DONE!

I completed one of the many DIY projects on my list.  I attempted the DIY silhouettes and they were not hard at all.  I really wanted to make one for my mother-in-law for Mother's Day and she was in town last weekend so it was the perfect opportunity for me to give it to her since I won't see her on actual Mother's Day.  I made hers with white paper on a black background but I did ours a little different.  I have been wanting something new above our couch and I really wanted to use burlap because...well I just love burlap in any form.  I think they turned out great!  Take a look...

I followed the tutorial on (Samster Mommy).

    DIY Silhouettes

I was just beating myself up the other day because I did not take my children to a silhouette artist who was in town.  Something about capturing their little profile right now is so sweet to me so I was really kicking myself in the arse.  Then I visited one of my favorite blogs and found a great tutorial for a DIY version.  Sounds scary right?  Well its not at all!  I can't wait to do this little project in the next couple of weeks.  I will share my pictures when I do.  Here is a link for the tutorial over at Samster Mommy.

ps...Would make great Mother's Day gifts for grandmothers!

Make this calendar during the 2 hour delay...

Here's a project that you could work on with the kids while they are home for the 97th 4th morning in a row.  It comes from good ole Martha and looks pretty simple.  *Click on the picture and it will bring up a larger version that is easier to read.
